Sir,
I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 19 May and to acquaint you in reply that no further information is in possession of this Department with regard to Private Edmunds Smith 2/9th Foot, who was sentenced to "Penal Servitude" on the 18 August 1865. I am to suggest that if The Mother of the Soldier should apply to The Under Secretary of State for the Colonies she might possibly obtain some report from the Colonial Government.
